What are Green Lipped Mussels?

The Green Lipped Mussel, or Perna Canaliculus, is a shellfish that originates from the coastal waters surrounding New Zealand. The mollusk has been a major part of New Zealander’s diet for centuries, and studies show that it could be a big reason why the natives of the island typically aren’t affected by arthritic or rheumatic disorders.

Green Lipped Mussel: Powder vs Oil

The Green Lipped Mussel capsules contain freeze-dried Green Lip Mussel powder. As discussed above, the mussels are rich in fatty acids, vitamins and minerals.

A decade ago when we started Motion Health, we made the conscious choice to use powder rather than oil in our green lipped mussel capsules.  Our powder capsules start with whole mussels that are freeze dried without any oil being removed. This ensures that our green lipped powder is of the highest quality, providing a 300mg therapeutic dose of ETA, DHA and EPA in every capsule.

Some powders on the market, called second runs, have the oil stripped away before they're processed and so are of inferior quality. Using only oil in the capsules presents its own set of issues, however, such as oxidization or rancidness. That’s why freeze drying under strict temperature controls produces the most stable, highest quality green lipped mussel powder available on the market today.
